The Elite Theatre Company Nontraditional Casting Policy

Unless otherwise contractually required by our licensing agreement, The Elite Theatre Company holds a nontraditional casting policy. Meaning we expect our directors to cast the best candidate for a role without considering the actor’s ethnicity, skin color, body shape, sex and/or gender when casting for a role.

Character Descriptions:

Freddy (30-50) – the owner and bartender of the Lapin Agile. A little naïve and scatter-brained, but is the heart of The Lapin Agile and keeps everyone well served. (Must be comfortable with a stage kiss – though may not be needed)

Germaine (25-40)
 – waitress and Freddy’s girlfriend, vivacious, and a dreamer who loves Freddy but is always ready for adventure with the opposite sex, and can hold her own intelligently and charmingly with any man. (Must be comfortable with a stage kiss)

Gaston (50-70) French accent
 – an older man, aware of all that goes on. A philosopher based on his age and experience, if not his intelligence.

Sagot (40-60) French accent
 – Picasso’s art dealer, a spirited salesman who loves talking about and explaining art.

Suzanne (20-30)
 – Picasso’s latest muse, young in the ways of love but feisty and ready to hold her own. (Must be comfortable with a stage kiss)

Charles Dabernow Schmendiman (20-30)
 – an over the top inventor, a veritable used car salesman who thinks he’s the best and the brightest in the room.

The Countess (30-40)
 – Einstein’s lady friend, a very regal and intelligent benefactor who is enamored with Albert.

A Female Admirer (30-40 will double with The Countess)
 – an enthusiastic fan of Picasso?

Albert Einstein (20-30) German accent
 – a young genius on the verge of becoming Einstein, but is still figuring out his way in the world. An extroverted introvert, in the right situation.

Pablo Picasso (20-30)
Spanish accent– on the verge of turning the art world upside down, he is a gregarious lothario who knows that women are his muse. He is charming and outgoing, though with a bit of confidence issues. (Must be comfortable with a stage kiss)

A Visitor (20-30) southern accent
 – a country boy from the American south. He is fond of his blue suede shoes, and passing along his lessons of life and fame. (Must be able to swivel his hips and possibly carry a tune)

The play is set in a bar in Paris in the year 1904… One year later, Albert Einstein would publish The Special Theory of Relativity, and three years later, Pablo Picasso would paint “Les Demoiselles D’Avignon.”
