Auditions: Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

The Elite Theatre is looking to cast it’s Summer Musical: Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Written by John Cameron Mitchell, Music by Stephen Trask
This groundbreaking Obie-winning Off-Broadway smash also won multiple awards for its hit film adaptation. It tells the story of “internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock ‘n’ roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with just “an angry inch.” This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious story is dazzlingly performed by Hedwig (formerly Hansel) in the form of a rock gig/stand-up comedy routine backed by the hard-rocking band “The Angry Inch.”
Using songs and monologues, Hedwig tells her story, which began in the former East Berlin where as Hansel he meets Luther, an American GI who promises to take the young man to the States on the condition that he switch his sex. After the bungled operation, Luther abandons newly named Hedwig in a Kansas trailer park where she turns to music and meets geeky Tommy Speck, whom she takes under her wing and soon falls for. Tommy steals her songs, achieves rock star fame, and Hedwig is once again cast aside. She decides to demand redress and stalks Tommy’s world tour, performing in the small dive bars that are situated next door to his stadium concerts. Hedwig describes her life’s search for “The Origin of Love” and her other half. It’s a rocking ride, funny, touching and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.
ALL ROLES ARE OPEN
***While Hedwig is traditionally male (dressed as female) and Yizhak is traditionally female (dressed as male) All Genders, Races, and Body Types are strongly encouraged to audition.***
Hedwig- Lead- (28-45) Vocals (A2-B4) A low-rent Rock Star. In every sense of the word. The story focuses on Hedwig’s transformation, and will require the performer to be adept with singing, dancing (at least suggestive and entertaining movement) comedy, drama, storytelling, character voices, slight german accent, and revealing costumes (possible shirtless, but no nudity.) Majority of the story is told by Hedwig via monologue, as her story is being recounted, this includes her playing her German Mother, American Husband Luther, American teenage lover, Tommy and others. Please prepare a monologue of 3-5 mins, or tell a story that highlights your ability to show emotional range, different characters, and have 2 rock songs on a device that can hook into a speaker (phone, ipod, etc) with an aux cable.. These songs do not have to be “musical theatre” but should have a Rock n’ Roll vibe. Each song should be no longer than 1 minute each and one should be by a male artist, and one should be a female artist. (1 of your 2 songs may be from the show- if necessary)
Yitzhak- Supporting (25-50) Vocals (vary) – Former Drag Queen, sidelined by Hedwig. Trapped in a loveless relationship, full of spite, obligation, bitterness and jealousy. Relegated to “back up singer” Yitzhak is abused and mistreated most of the show. There is some redemption, and comedic opportunities, and solo singing, you are very much outshined by the abusive Hedwig. Please prepare 2 songs with contrasting styles and do not have to come from “musical theatre.” Each song should be no longer than 1 minute each. Guitar a plus.
Band Members (15-100+)- Do you play an instrument and want to ROCK? We are also looking for band members to be on stage to be a part of the “angry inch” Guitar, Bass, Drums, Electric Triangle… whatever you play, come show us your stuff. You can bring your own instruments, we will have an amp and monitor for instruments.
